Securities and Exchange Board (SEBI):

The SEBI stands for the Securities and Exchange Board of India, established in the year 1988. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is a government entity. SEBI is responsible for the regulation of the financial market in India. SEBI also plays various other roles such as the promotion of the securities market in India, protection of the investor's interests, and regulation of all the activities that take place in the market.

What SEBI does to make sure the financial market operated without any disturbance.

  • Frames rules and regulations for Financial Market

  • Keeps an eye on the operations of various stock and commodity exchanges

  • Protects the interests of the investors and other parts

  • Ensure that there is no manipulation

  • Keeps stockbrokers, corporates and other market participants in check


Let's understand the stock exchange with the help of an example.

Assume you want to buy a house. Who do you get in touch with to help connect you to a prospective seller? A real estate agent, right? on a similar note, the stock exchange in India is an intermediary that connects buyers and sellers and facilities a trade of the stocks listed on that exchange.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) there are two principal stock exchanges in India. Also, there are other small exchanges.

There are a total of 23 stock exchanges in India.
